Supervisor: Director of Library for Accessible Books and Media

Summary: The Tennessee Library for Accessible Books and Media is seeking a staff and customer-focused individual to join our team as an Assistive Technology Specialist. This federally funded position will work with the staff to keep informed of current trends, engage with patrons to work through technology issues, and provide other technology support. This position requires a passion for helping others, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to promoting access to information. Successful applicants will demonstrate curiosity, patience, and an eagerness to work with a diverse patron base via a variety of modes of communication.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provide 1-on-1 coaching to patrons on assistive technology tasks.
  • Assist and run group workshops for patrons on assistive technology topics and braille study.
  • Compile resources and prepare documents to provide patrons with assistive technology support.
  • Assist in evaluating community needs, proposing workshop topics, and suggesting new technology.
  • Keep records of support activities, training, and other patron-related support, and technical, clerical, or administrative support.
  • Work closely with Perkins Library and other professionals to stay connected to issues regarding assistive technology, library services, and develop a broad network of technical contacts to assist in support activities, research, and development.
  • Participate in conferences and trade shows when necessary to speak at events and to help demonstrate products and services.
  • Provide assistive technology support to other Secretary of State departments.
  • Assist with unloading, sorting, checking in, and otherwise processing incoming materials returned via U.S. Mail, generally in large quantities.
  • Shelve materials, pull materials from shelves, shift materials on shelves, clean materials and shelves, and otherwise perform stacks maintenance tasks.
  • Provide coverage for other positions in LABM when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Technology, Communications, or related field preferred. Completion of related certification program(s) and/or prior experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability to maintain detailed statistical records using Microsoft Word and Excel to meet NLS and in-house needs.
  • Experience using Assistive Technology such as:
    • Screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, Window-Eyes, System Access
    • Screen magnification programs including Magic and Zoomtext
    • Built-in accessibility tools for Mac, Windows, IOS and Android
    • Digital audio devices including Victor Stream
    • Text-to-speech applications including Dragon and Kurzweil
    • Online literacy resources including Bookshare
    • Coaching, teaching, training, social work, or tutoring experience.
  • Braille proficiency is preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Possess the interpersonal skills to work within the structure of state government and represent TSLA and its programs.
  • Ability to perform high volume, repetitive tasks accurately and with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan and organize tasks in order to complete assigned duties in a timely manner, including the delegation of work to volunteers.
  • Ability to be a positive influence within the building and section.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Warm and professional manner in dealing with coworkers, volunteers, and the public in person, via telephone, and by email.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and maintain paper and electronic records.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron files.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to handle materials weighing 25 pounds on a consistent daily basis and move loaded rolling bins containing up to 500 items.
  • Ability to bend and lift materials onto stacks both in high and low positions.
  • Ability to read and assimilate multi-digit numbers, including performing detailed data entry accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to operate handheld scanners and USB drives effectively.
  • Ability to use job-related software effectively.
  • Ability to work in stacks environment with books that contain dust and other allergens.
  • Ability to simultaneously use telephone and computer system for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
Health, Safety, and Collections Security:
  • Assist the organization in creating a safe and healthy working environment by working safely with the equipment provided.
  • Follow instructions given for health and safety purposes and immediately report any unsafe working practices or hazardous working conditions.
Salary: $45,000 annually plus State of Tennessee benefits package : This position is federally funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services’, Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grants to States Funding program.
