Health Promotion at IU-Bloomington supports student success through a holistic and integrated approach to wellbeing. Health Promotion provides a broad range of prevention, education, and intervention services grounded in evidence based practices, assessment, and evaluation. Core service areas include Substance Use Intervention Services, a Collegiate Recovery Community, Nutrition Services, and Health Education and Outreach, which offers workshops on topics such as mental health, sexual health education, hazing prevention, and alcohol and other drugs prevention. Together, these programs advance student wellbeing and contribute to a healthier, more thriving campus community.

Job Summary

The Peer Health and Wellness Educator is a trained undergraduate student leader who advances student well-being at IU-Bloomington through evidence-based health education, peer engagement, and campus outreach initiatives. As a representative of the Office of Health Promotion, the Peer Health and Wellness Educator will deliver educational programs, facilitate discussions, supports prevention initiatives, and connects students to campus and community.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides confidential, nonjudgmental support to students related to health and wellness concerns in accordance with IU policies and ethical standards.
  • Assesses student wellness needs and makes appropriate referrals to campus and community health and wellness resources; conducts follow-ups appropriate to support access to services.
  • Creates and supports evening programs by staffing the Wellness House Monday-Thursday 5:00-8:00PM.
  • Determines educational needs and gaps for students based on national and community-level trends and IU's campus culture to inform content creation.
  • Delivers accurate, evidence-based health and culturally responsive health education on health topics and harm reduction practices (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs, Sexual Health, Nutrition, Hazing/Healthy Belonging, Stress Management and Mental Health).
  • Addresses health-related myths and misinformation through research-informed education.
  • Highlight 2-3 of our content areas to prioritize deeper knowledge and understanding on those areas.
  • Assists with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Health Promotion programs, workshops, outreach activities, and campus events.
  • Promotes healthy behaviors and campus environments through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and active bystander engagement in alignment with university guidelines.
  • Represents Health Promotion and IU-Bloomington in a professional manner during all interactions and outreach activities.
  • Collaborates with professional staff, peer educators, campus departments, and community partners to support program goals and continuous improvement.
  • Participates in weekly team meetings.
  • Participates in weekly or bi-monthly supervision meetings with Peer Education Supervisor.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Complete the NASPA Peer Educator Certification as part of employment onboarding.

Preferred

  • Studying degrees/majors including public health, psychology, social work, education, or related discipline.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • Experience in health, wellness, caregiving, advocacy, or community support

SKILLS

Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to engage respectfully with individuals from various backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to provide nonjudgmental, confidential peer support and adhere to ethical standards and university policies.
  • Willingness to be trained in evidence-based health education practices, peer support skills, and campus referral protocols.
  • Ability to communicate health information clearly and ask for guidance when unsure.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and accountability, including meeting attendance, participation expectations, and program activities.
  • Commitment to student well-being and belonging.
  • Ability to balance peer educator responsibilities with academic and personal

Preferred

  • Interest in or exposure to topics such as mental health, sexual health, substance use, nutrition, physical activity, stress management, or health equity.
  • Experience participating in peer education, mentoring, student organizations and/or student organization leadership, residence life, community service, or other health-related programming and outreach.
  • Comfort engaging in conversations about sensitive or personal topics with appropriate boundaries.
  • Willingness to engage in outreach, presentations, or facilitated discussions with support and coaching.
  • Demonstrated interest in advocacy and environmental or policy-level health promotion.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. It involves both sedentary work and periods of movement around an office environment and the campus. The person in this position must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

Must be available for training: Monday, Aug. 10th through Thursday, Aug. 15th from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
