Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Special Agent Supervisor, the Special Investigator (SI) evaluates and conducts the pre-investigative screening and assessment of complaints. The SI selected will be assigned to the Complaint Assessment Team (CAT), which is a multi-disciplinary team responsible for evaluating complaints for referral to criminal and/or civil prosecution teams. Incumbents may work independently or with a group in executing a lawful and thorough investigation of alleged violations and pursue cases for prosecution where applicable. The SI is flexible in conforming to duties and to meet the needs of assigned tasks and projects; performs assignments skillfully, professionally, courteously, and efficiently; works collaboratively in a team environment; and exercises independence, initiative, and excellent judgment. May be required to conduct collateral duties as necessary.  This is a statewide position and travel may be required.

Working Conditions

Telework is available but is contingent on DMFEA's operational needs. Telework requires California residency.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


Applicants should have excellent writing skills and experience reviewing and analyzing a variety of documents. Additional desirable qualifications include working knowledge of Excel; and familiarity with government and/or private insurance programs. Must be able to exercise good judgment and travel throughout the State of California.
