Pay

Hiring Range: $2,096.00 - $2,515.60 Biweekly

Pay Range: $2,096.00 - $2,935.20 Biweekly

The Cataloging Librarian supports the patron experience by ensuring library materials in a variety of formats are easily discoverable by members of the community. Under the direct supervision of the Collection Services Senior Manager, and with an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Cataloging Librarian will:

  • Perform Integrated Library System (ILS) database maintenance on a regularly scheduled basis including purging relevant records, validating collection data, and assisting in collection inventory efforts.
  • Maintain authority control across the collection using Library of Congress (LOC) authority headings. Interprets and applies LCSH, AACR2 and RDA core standards, and the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Train, evaluate, and supervise the cataloging technicians to ensure high quality records. Escalate issues as needed to the Collection Services Senior Manager. Supervise department in the absence of the manager and assistant manager.
  • Perform copy cataloging and maintain print, nonprint, and electronic materials.
  • Perform original cataloging as needed.
  • Provide training to library staff on more advanced functions of the ILS as needed.
  • Stay abreast of changes to cataloging standards and best practices. Recommend improvements to SJCPL's cataloging procedures when relevant.
  • Prepare and analyze reports for senior management.
  • Take part in library initiatives, projects, and teams, as well as professional organizations and conference attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education

  • ALA (American Library Association) accredited MLIS (Master’s of Library and Information Science) with a focus in database management and/or cataloging required with at least 2 years of relevant experience required.
  • A valid State of Indiana Librarian Certification, obtained within three years of hire as a condition of employment.

Hours

  • Full time, 40 hour workweek, Monday through Friday.
  • Flexible availability for system updates or response to outages.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated understanding of library ILS systems, bibliographic record structures, and core library operations. Thorough knowledge of OCLC and automated library systems.
  • Knowledge of and experience with current library cataloging and classification principles, tools, methods and practices, including OCLC, USMARC, RDA, LCSH, DDC, AACR2, SQL programming, bibliographic formats and standard, and authority files.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills.
  • Public service orientation and commitment to excellent and genuine customer service.
  • Demonstration of character and integrity in all situations while upholding SJCPL’s ethical standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with current library technology.
  • Experience working with computers, including Internet, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Windows.
  • Physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift, and move library materials (up to 50 lbs.) and to stand for long periods of time.
